Dr Martin Walker, Deputy Director

Martin is a Reader in Infectious Disease Modelling, whose work centres on the mathematical and statistical modelling of human, animal and zoonotic infectious diseases, with a particular focus on parasitic and tropical diseases. He is the mathematical modelling lead for the RVC–APHA WOAH Collaborating Centre for Risk Analysis and Modelling, an investigator with the Neglected Tropical Disease Modelling Consortium and co-head of the schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiasis and lymphatic filariasis themes at the Infectious Diseases Data Observatory (IDDO), University of Oxford. He also holds an Honorary Senior Lectureship at the School of Public Health, Imperial College London.

Martin serves as Subject Editor (Helminths and Helminthic Diseases) for Parasites & Vectors and contributes to policy and programme decision-making through roles including Chair of the Data Safety Monitoring Committees for DNDi/AbbVie and the TAKEOFF Consortium, and membership of Ghana's Onchocerciasis Expert Committee. His recognition and esteem include Fellowship of the Royal Statistical Society and the Higher Education Academy, service as a UKRI Centres for Doctoral Training panel member in Artificial Intelligence, and a 2025 commendation from the Gates Foundation.

Martin holds an MA (Oxon) in Biological Sciences from The Queen's College, University of Oxford; an MSc in Control of Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine; a PhD in Mathematical Epidemiology from Imperial College London; and a PGCert in Veterinary Education from the RVC.
